Will I get a fixed penalty notice or a summons to attend court?
Generally speaking for lesser offences, to avoid clogging up the courts’ time unnecessarily, a fixed penalty notice can be offered. If of course you want to defend your case then your case will go to court. The following table shows the guidelines as to whether your case is likely to be dealt with by fixed penalty notice. So if the speed limit is 30mph, a fixed penalty notice will be issued for speeds of up to 49mph but you will normally get a summons for speeds exceeding 50mph.
